Free Audio Books All Summer!

Teens can get two free audiobook downloads each week this summer for ten weeks through SYNC, a joint venture between audiobook publishers and AudioFile Magazine. Each week, kids can listen to one popular young adult title paired with a classic that connects with its theme from the top audiobook publishers absolutely free. Downloads are in MP3 format, hosted by Overdrive, and are Mac and Windows compatible. Each audiobook will be available for download for only 7 days, but once downloaded can be listened to at any time. Read more about it.

Dark Shadows Coming to the Big Screen

As a child, I remember coming home from school and turning on the old black&white reruns of the drama Dark Shadows. It was a favorite of mine and my sister's. Now the serious, dark series has been turned into a humorous movie by Tim Burton starring his sidekick Johnny Depp. Read all about it in this week's School Library Journal's Teen Edition.

TEEN Sexting is a Felony

What seems like a harmless prank, can get YOU into a lot of trouble. Posting inappropriate images or videos of yourself or others online could be a felony and mean you lose your job, or your acceptance into the school of your choice. Webcast and Other News

The live webcast for author Rick Riordan came and went. It actually concluded 25 minutes early. I had several disappointed students show up and were saddened that it was already over. He showed fans some Egyptian artifacts and talked about his books and answered questions sent to him earlier. Book number three of the Kane Chronicles comes out today.

The next meeting of the Reading Rumble team will be this Thursday, May 3rd during all three lunches. We will see what books still need to be read and talk about final details.

This is the last week for GET IN GEAR tutorials after school. Thursday will be the final day offering an extra hour of help and a ride on the late bus.

Friday is the last day to request books from other campuses. ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE MAY 18TH!!!!

Finally, Mrs Gisch and I are certainly ready for the summer. Her bulletin board display says "Flip Thru a Good Book This Summer," and my window display says "Sizzling Suspense for Summer." I think we're secretly dreaming of getting out for the summer.

Live Author Webcast with Rick Riordan

The library will host a live author webcast next Tuesday, May 1st from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (central time). Students may attend during their lunch period. Read more about the live event at Rick Riordan Webcast.

Happenings in the Library

The library has some interesting displays this month. One reminds students turning 18 to register to vote in the upcoming election. It is part of the Rock the Vote campaign. You can read more about it online. The movement empowers young people to use their political power.

Also, the library is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with a small display. One hundred years ago this week, over 1,500 people lost their lives when the British liner sunk after being struck by an iceberg.

April is also National Poetry Month, so we have books on display.
A couple of classes are displaying works this month. Ms. Gwen Cash's AP History Classes painted butterflies on tiles which are on display in the art cabinet. Also, Ms. Pfeifer's AP English classes are displaying some of their senior scrapbooks. Come see these marvelous works.

Finally, the Reading Rumble team has tentatively been formed and students have met once to guess at practice quotes from some of the 20 books they've been reading all year. This year's competition is May 19th at Clear Falls High School. We look forward to winning!
