Live Author Webcast with Rick Riordan

The library will host a live author webcast next Tuesday, May 1st from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (central time). Students may attend during their lunch period. Read more about the live event at Rick Riordan Webcast.

Happenings in the Library

The library has some interesting displays this month. One reminds students turning 18 to register to vote in the upcoming election. It is part of the Rock the Vote campaign. You can read more about it online. The movement empowers young people to use their political power.

Also, the library is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with a small display. One hundred years ago this week, over 1,500 people lost their lives when the British liner sunk after being struck by an iceberg.

April is also National Poetry Month, so we have books on display.
A couple of classes are displaying works this month. Ms. Gwen Cash's AP History Classes painted butterflies on tiles which are on display in the art cabinet. Also, Ms. Pfeifer's AP English classes are displaying some of their senior scrapbooks. Come see these marvelous works.

Finally, the Reading Rumble team has tentatively been formed and students have met once to guess at practice quotes from some of the 20 books they've been reading all year. This year's competition is May 19th at Clear Falls High School. We look forward to winning!

High School Student Builds School Library in Sierra Leone

Eighteen-year-old Mankaprr Conteh has turned her school project into an international cause. She's helped build a library at the school her father attended as a child in Magburaka, a rural area in Sierra Leone's Northern Provence where school libraries are extremely rare. Teen Tech Week @ Your Library

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library Association (ALA) has designated this week as Teen Tech Week. We won't be celebrating because CCHS library, like many libraries across the country, is closed this week for testing.

However, I've decided to learn one thing new this week. The Clear Creek High Life newspaper has an article in their February issue about Pininterst. Evidently, it's like an online bulletin board where users find things online they like, then pin it onto their bulletin boards. You do have to be invited by another user, which is kind of weird, but who knows? It might be fun!

Children's Books Win Big at the Oscars

Two children's books made into movies won Oscar Awards. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick was made into the movie Hugo  which won several Oscars. Also, the children's book The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce was made into a 15-minute short film which won for Best Animated Short Film.

Finally, it hasn't won an Oscar yet, but the YA novel The Hunger Games, which has been made into a movie will open March 23rd. Readers of all ages will be there waiting for their favorite characters to come to life. Might be as big as the Twilight films. You think?
